The Neon Boneyard

Posted by Kate Rise on

I had a free day while on a working trip to Las Vegas in mid February so I decided to check out the Neon Boneyard. I had read a little online and I was super excited to see it.  I hopped in a cab from my hotel on The Strip and headed to Old Las Vegas. (You can a take a bus but it takes over an hour and half with a little walk from the bus stop) It is important to book ahead online as space on each tour is limited to about 20 people. I actually arrived earlier than my 12.30 pm tour but they were able to move me into an earlier time slot.

The Boneyard is a two acre outdoor exhibition space which features more than 150 signs. What a cool place! My guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and she made the tour very entertaining. It was great to hear not only the stories behind the signs, the designers and the creators but also some of the history of Las Vegas. I loved every minute of the one hour tour and took hundreds of photos along the way. I have shared some of my favorite photos here.

Just a little side note. I also wanted to check out Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. I headed there after the tour. Several people told me that this was walkable. I would NOT recommend walking if you are alone. It’s a 20 minute walk across intersections and under a freeway. Despite pulling up my big girl panties and reaching for my inner cool and attempting to act like a local, I felt incredibly vulnerable. I made it passed several groups of men, pan handlers and some drug related drama but I definitely wished I had cabbed it. Character building right?
