A Lilac Celebration

We have our first full month of the 2023 season under our belts. Along with our regular guests there were several school groups visiting and the cruise ships have returned as well. It is so good to see Main Street full once again! The weather in May varied from very cold to gorgeous warm spring days. On one particularly chilly day with bitter winds and temperatures in the 50’s a couple entered the shop. I asked if they were staying warm? The wife said, “Yes, I just layered up.” The husband joked that he actually weighed just 120 pounds underneath the many layers of cold weather clothing he was wearing! Thankfully warmer days have arrived.

The Secret Garden at the Grand Hotel was stunning this spring! Amanda took some beautiful photos highlighting Erynn Rice's art. We were excited to hear that Erynn is the winner of the poster contest with her painting "Lilac Secrets" for this year's Lilac Festival. She captured the garden for everyone to enjoy on notecards, magnets, Christmas ornaments, and stickers available at Poppins and our online store.The Secret Garden is beautiful all season long and is a must see when you visit. Stop by Poppins and we would love to show you Erynn’s artwork and share directions to the garden too. It can be tricky the first time you try to find it!

It is an especially beautiful time to visit Mackinac Island. The lilacs are blooming and the Lilac Festival is in full swing. As we ride our bikes to and from work, their scent hangs heavy in the air. The blossoms range from white to all shades of purple and there are over 200 lilac varieties on the island.

To join the celebration we installed a new Poppins window display with giant paper lilacs showcasing all our favorite lilac-themed products. When you walk in Poppins you will be greeted with a table filled with lovely items for you to enjoy.
