Holiday Fun

During the summer season guests often mention that visiting Mackinac Island at Christmas time is on their bucket list. It really is a magical time of year! Main Street is festive with decorations, lights, and music playing. When the horses clip-clop past, it truly makes you feel like you are in a Christmas movie.  With strings of lights on the rails and a tree in the bow, The Huron looks extra cheery crossing from St. Ignace. This time of year takes a little longer--about 40 minutes one way. The ferry was packed with guests on the first weekend of December...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Last week's snow is melting with the warmer weather, and snowmobiles line the streets instead of bicycles. Around town, people's voices were filled with excitement talking about their holiday plans. Even the men on the dock, bundled up against the cold, took time to wish ferry passengers a cheerful, "Happy Thanksgiving!" as they disembarked. Christmas wreaths, with red bows and white lights, are hung on the streetlights making Main Street extra festive. The holidays are a special time to visit Mackinac Island that you won't want to miss! Poppins, Poppins{Home} and Caddywampus will be open for shopping the following dates...

Season's End

October days slowly grew shorter, but we still managed to pack in a lot of fun! A Poppins dinner at The Woods was extra special as Kate's mom joined us for a delicious meal. On our walk home, the night sky displayed a beautiful lunar halo. Our fall window was a hit as people would stop to look at the beautiful wreaths crafted by Kate.  Halloween was celebrated a week early on the island with children trick-or-treating along Main Street. The Poppins team joined in the costume fun after hours and coordinated as an “Enchanted Garden”. Our last day of the summer...

Fall Begins on Mackinac Island

Riding around the island there are many signs of the fast approaching autumn season. Along M-185 the late summer wildflowers, Fireweed and Queen Anne’s Lace are beginning to fade. The days have that crisp fall feel in the air and are growing shorter, bringing vibrant sunrises and sunsets that are incredible to witness. On September 1st several of us discussed the different emotions we were feeling—sadness for the season's end so close in sight, disbelief the summer months had passed so quickly, and also, a little excitement for off-season plans.  We’ve had the pleasure of greeting so many guests these...

June Highlights

The 74th annual Lilac Festival brought many visitors to view 250 varieties of lilacs and participate in many activities. The lilacs bloomed right on cue and their sweet scent hung in the air. On the first Saturday of the festival, we cheered on the participants of the 10k running race as they passed our front door on Main Street. Many stopped by to shop after the race and it was fun to congratulate them and hear about their experience. The general consensus was that it was a fun course, but Mission Hill was a killer! The Poppins window display was...
